My oldest group took on a very challenging project for our Picasso Blue Period focus week. I did this project in Carla Sonheim’s “Y is for Yellow” class. I think it is a great project for learning about value and learning how to build up color in watercolor. We started by drawing from Picasso’s original […]

Elephants from India
Day two of the “World Traveler” workshop was all about India. We started by reading Elephant Dance, Memories of India by Theresa Heine. We then drew a large elephant on watercolor paper and decorated our elephants using oil pastels. We finished these by painting them in liquid watercolor. Fun project with lots of variety!
Llama Love
Our World Traveler workshop started this week with a visit to Peru. First, we read Up and Down the Andes by Laurie Krebs and Aurelia Fronty. We learned a little bit about Peru and the famous textiles produced by Peruvians. We talked about line and pattern, and then created our own patterns in oil pastel. […]
Hermit Crab Painting
For our last day of Underwater Adventures we started out by reading A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle. Hermit realizes he has outgrown his shell, finds a new one but decides it needs some decoration. He sets out to decorate his new home and makes several friends along the way. Very cute story […]
Finished Memories and Oil Resist Flowers
This week we finished our Favorite Memory paintings. They included so many details to really make their story clear. After painting with watercolor, we used an extra fine tip Sharpie to bring out the details. They all turned out wonderful. Unfortunately, I was so involved in class on some days, I forgot to take pictures! […]
My Favorite Memory
This week we drew from our imaginations, depicting our favorite memories. Some students love to draw from their imaginations and some really struggle. I do think it is a good exercise and gave us an opportunity to discuss planning our compositions and doing thumbnails to plan our page. I have to say, I really enjoyed […]
Peyton’s 9th Birthday Party
Today I taught a class for Peyton’s 9th birthday party. What a great group of girls! Peyton had requested something with flowers. Using flowers for observation and inspiration, the girls drew flowers from life and from their imaginations. They then added patterns and details with oil pastel. For the last step, we used liquid watercolor […]
Dinosaur Stomp
This week I read Saturday Night at the Dinosaur Stomp (by Carol Diggory Shields, illustrated by Scott Nash) to the K-2nd grade group. It’s a fun, rhyming book about dinosaurs having a party. The bright illustrations of dancing dinosaurs provided our inspiration. We drew our dinosaurs with crayons and painted them with liquid watercolor. We […]
Colorful Fish
We started a colorful fish project this week. Most of the students didn’t finish, but I wanted to share the completed ones. They are so bright and fun! These were drawn with black oil pastel. Details were drawn with white oil pastel. We talked about warm and cool colors and chose either a warm or […]
St Basil’s Cathedral
When I was about 14, inspired by a travel ad for Russia, I did a painting of buildings similar to St Basil’s Cathedral. I came across it recently and thought it would be fun for my classes to do. We started out discussing St Basil’s Cathedral, its location in Moscow, and a little history. Then […]
