Watercolor Tropical Fish

For the last couple of weeks, we have been working on drawing and painting tropical fish.  The older students worked in pencil and Sharpie, drawing from detailed illustrations of fish.  The younger group used black oil pastel and drew from simple, stylized illustrations of fish.  Both groups used liquid watercolor for the water, adding salt for texture, and pan watercolor for the rest of the painting.  Working with the pan watercolors was really a challenge for a lot of students in both groups.  It really is tricky to get the right ratio of paint and water.  They all did a great job drawing, and they also all improved their watercolor painting skills. I love all this bright color!
