Tessellations

This was my first time to teach tessellations. Tessellations are single tiles repeated with no space in between. MC Escher used tessellations in his artwork, so we started out by looking at his work. Then we made our tiles. This part was a little tricky, but I like the method we used because it made it impossible to know what we were going to make. We all ended up with an odd organic shape. We then traced our tiles on a square piece of paper, filling the whole page with no spaces in between. Then we got to use our imaginations. We took some time looking at our papers and trying to see something in the shapes. This was challenging but was probably my favorite part of the process. They saw birds, fish, people, monsters, etc… For some, this took awhile, but I loved the “Aha!” look on their faces when they found something. We used Sharpies to outline and Prismacolor colored pencils to add color. I taught this project to a wide age range, 5-14, and all enjoyed it.
