Royal Flush

We used playing cards as the inspiration for this project. We looked at images of playing card art, both historical and recent. Each student chose a face card to work from. The advanced students gridded their playing cards and enlarged them, copying each square of the grid onto larger paper. The younger groups used the cards as a guide. Both approaches provided great learning opportunities. Students carefully observed proportions and details. The advanced group were challenged by the task of accurately enlarging a complex image. The younger groups had a little more freedom to use their creativity, and they sure did. 🙂

Students drew in pencil, outlined in Sharpie, and were given the option of adding color with colored pencil, marker, or both. This was a time consuming project. Some students worked for three hours on these. The hard work and attention to detail really shows.
