Pattern Animals

Last week, we took a break from color and focused on line and pattern.  We started our lesson discussing pattern, and I shared my Zentangle for Kids cards.  These Zentangle cards take intricate patterns and breaks them down into do-able steps.  Some students got really excited about these, others stuck to more simple lines and shapes.  They did a warm up exercise, trying out Zentangle patterns or creating their own patterns in pre-drawn squares.

Then we began our drawing of an animal of their choice.  My only requirement was that the animal be drawn large.  Then we filled sections of the animal and/or background with pattern.  Only a few students finished this last week.  Drawing patterns really forces you slow down, which I think contributes to the relaxing effect of Zentangle.  It is fun for adults too!
