Our second day of Underwater Adventures was jelly fish day. Â Our 2-D project was a mixed media painting. Â We started with a gradient background in either blue-ish or pink-ish tempera paint. Â Our goal was to learn how to blend smoothly, moving from one color to the next without a hard line. Â While our backgrounds were drying, we assembled our 3-D jellyfish. Â I was both nervous and excited about these. Â They were a little tricky but turned out great! Â The plastic parts were painted with a tinted glitter glaze. Â We tore the plastic sheeting to make the “arms” look ruffled like real jelly fish. Â Iridescent film made the stomach and Brite-lace was used for the tentacles. Â We attached monofilament thread so students could hang them up.
While the glue was drying on our 3-D jellies, we went back to work on our mixed media project. Â Using chalk pastel, students drew and colored jelly fish. Â We talked about limiting colors for each jelly and using white to show a light source. Â After that we drew seaweed with black oil pastel. Â The final touch was a splattering of white paint for air bubbles. Â I can’t believe how well these turned out! Â I tried to get pictures of all them, but it looks like I missed a couple. Â They were all amazing.
Thank you to Patty at DSS for the idea. : )
