African Chimpanzees

Our last class of the World Traveler workshop took us to Tanzania.  We read The Watcher by Jeanette Winter.  This book tells the story of Jane Goodall’s childhood and her life spent living with and studying chimpanzees.  Next we drew and painted a chimpanzee in a tree.  We drew with a large black crayon and painted with tempera paint.  Texture was added to the chimpanzee by scratching through wet gray paint to the black paint underneath.  The last step was to add tissue paper leaves with Mod Podge.  Some found this to be one of the more difficult projects of the week.  I think they did a great job.  I love the sweet expressions on the faces. : )

Thank you to Patty at DSS for the project idea. : )
