Watercolor Whales

I LOVE how this project turned out!  I recently went to a workshop in Santa Barbara, CA.  One of the speakers was Gina Lee.    She did a very similar whale project.  I made a few adjustments to make this work for my workshops.  I couldn’t be more pleased with how they turned out!

We started out by creating a wash of cool colors, adding salt and alcohol for cool textures.  After that dried, we added the water line with white tempera paint, drew the whale with Sharpie marker, painted the whale, and added the collaged sailboat.  The next day we added details to the whale with white paint pen and a final touch of white splatters with white tempera.

Even my youngest students did a fabulous job with this project.  Thank you, Gina, for the inspiration!
