Portraits with Hats

For the last project of the session, I needed a project we could all finish in one hour.  This project fit the bill and gave us some practice on facial proportions, color mixing, and painting techniques.  We began by reading Do You Have a Hat? by Eileen Spinelli, Illustrated by Geraldo Valerio.  It is a cute book about the different hats worn by famous people, Francisco de Goya, Walt Whitman, Amelia Earhart, etc…  I provided templates but encouraged students to draw their own hats.  Then we discussed facial proportions, drew our people and an environment appropriate for the hat they were wearing.  We ended up with a lot of queens and kings but also some very creative characters.  This was a great way to end the session. : )  Well done!
