Chinese Vases with Flowers

I love how these Chinese Vases turned out!  There was a lot of skills packed into this short project.  We started out by looking at pictures of Chinese vases for inspiration and talking about symmetry and pattern.  Students drew their vase shape, cut it out and painted a pattern of their choice in blue watercolor.  They glued the painted vases on green paper and painted the flowers in tempera paint.  They were only given blue, yellow, and white paint.  Their challenge was to create a wide variety of colors with this limited palette.  The finished paintings have a beautiful, subtle color scheme.  Most students finished in one hour and were pleased to be able to take their masterpieces home.
