Charcoal Elephants 6th grade and up

I was so excited to start this class for older students.  I am really looking forward to taking on more advanced projects.  This elephant project was a great way to start.  I really emphasized that I want them to draw what they see, not what they know is there.  This is harder than you would think.  The other challenge is seeing value, the lights and darks, and not getting confused by local color. We used vine charcoal, compressed charcoal, and Magic Rub erasers.  They worked from black and white photographs.

This class did an amazing job!  I think we are going to have a lot of fun this year. : )

It looks like I missed getting a picture of one.  My apologies!
